Journeys from Dawn to Dusk

Richard Szmyd, photographer

My cousin Richard Szmyd put on the first exhibition of his photographs, Journeys from Dawn to Dusk, earlier this month. The extended Walaszek clan was out in full force, including yours truly. Richard’s focus is on capturing scenes at transitions in light, i.e., at dawn or at dusk. From the website of Unity in Chicago, where the exhibition took place:

My photographs are about seeing moments of quiet beauty. An ordinaryscene is transformed by the quality of light to become extraordinary. This awareness of earth and sky, in the present moment is a gift, awonderful feeling of spaciousness, substance and light.

Flimmering floom

Carl SandburgMaddy and I checked out Poetry Speaks to Children today on a trip to our bookstore-cum-library as part of our read-a-lot, spend-a-little plan. I am enamored of Carl Sandburg’s poem “On a Flimmering Floom You Shall Ride”, described on NPR as a “nonsense” poem, though lyrically it makes a lot of sense. It sounds spectacular, and I especially enjoy the words “flimmering” and “floom”, which give me all sorts of yummy ideas.

Bundt cake

In 1950, H. David Dalquist agreed to try to mass-produce a bake pan necessary to make bundkuchen, a traditional German cake that may have its roots in the defeat of the Ottomans at the gates of Vienna: to celebrate European victory, the Viennese bakers created cakes in the shape of Ottoman turbans. Eventually, the Bundt(R) pan became the best-selling cake pan in America, and Dalquist’s NordicWare remains a top producer of baking equipment.Scandinavian Sand Cake

Dalquist died in January 2005 and the New York Times, in their year-end review of notable deaths, published an in memoriam of Dalquist and a recipe for Scandinavian Sand Cake.

With the help of Maddy and Lucy, I made my first Bundt cake. The best part of the experience was trying to grind cardamom seeds, resulting in the grinding of the grinder instead. Behold our creation in the picture!

Tech overload

Cyberduck

Cyberduck. SubEthaEdit. TextWrangler. Basecamp. Ruby on Rails. Python vs Perl.

I’ve gone overboard with the tech geekery and now need a serious break. Tomorrow morning the GWF heads off to an internet connection-free home in Chicago … so I should get some respite.

Alistair Cooke

My New Year’s Resolution: after my death, I would like to become a source of minerals for craven bone hounds. Alistair Cooke was apparently harvested for reincarnation as a dental implant or orthopedic compound, according to the BBC. Hmmm, I wonder how much our cats’ bones will be worth some day?
